I just can’t seem to help it. Every Monday at 08:00 pm, I simply have to be in front of the TV watching “Gotham”. This last episode, Gordon is finally accepted into the “Court of Owls”. The Court is a secret organization which appears to parallel “The League of Shadows” in the movie “Batman Begins”. No, they aren’t a clan of ninjas like The League, but they do consider themselves to be the judge and jury of Gotham. On the other hand (like the League), they appear to be the instruments of Bruce Wayne’s mental and martial art training used later in his personae as “Batman”. It seems that they are planning to use him as a weapon against the city, but I suspect he’ll be falling out with them and become Gotham’s Defender. Not only did I see parallels with “Batman Begins”, but I also saw a nod to the movie, “Batman Returns”. In that motion picture, Selena Kyle was pushed over the edge by a fall from a window several stories high. That near death experience warped her psyche into her alter ego, “Catwoman”. During the last episode of “Gotham”, wouldn’t you know that Selena Kyle was pushed out of a window (several stories up), falling to an alley below. And wouldn’t you know as she lay unconscious, numerous cats emerge around her prone body (just like in the movie “Batman Returns”). Now, some might be annoyed at these parallels, but I embrace them. The show has taken the Batman saga and made it their own, while keeping some ties to earlier versions. It keeps me coming back week after week, and I can’t wait to see the next episode.
